The Parish War Memorial (East) Window
Subscriptions from the whole parish, not just church members, paid for the erection of
this magnificent window, and the inscription says it is to remember those who served in
the 1914 - 1918 war, which we think includes the injured, the survivors and the
bereaved families.
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his
friends" (John 15: 13) says the text, and on the plaques either side of the chancel
and in the book under the war memorial we see
the names of the people who did just that.
What have we learned from their sacrifice?
What is unusual about the window is that it
portrays ordinary people from every walk of life,
farmers, miners, naval officers, not the saints and prophets who usually
feature in church art. If you live in the parish, you can probably still find descendants of the people for whom the
window was installed.
We will remember them. We will remember them.
