Possible new windows At the end of the windows series in our Parish Magazine, Muriel concludes “I hope you have enjoyed our look at our windows, and perhaps seen them with a fresh eye.   I have noticed two glaring omissions in the events recorded in our stained glass—there is not a Nativity window or one which would be very important to our church—the Conversion of St. Paul.   I wonder why no-one has thought to include these?” We still have five plain windows which are available for conversion to stained glass.  What would you think should be a suitable subject today?    As opposed to biblical scenes, perhaps it should be more personal and feature known good people such as those shown above, but of course these are not specific to our own church.  Perhaps a past vicar as is the case with our west window. For the subject which is more relevant to St, Paul’s Church, the Conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus, there seems to be quite a range of interpretations of Acts 9:3–9.  These range from the simplistic on the right below (which could be quite easily accommodated in a window to the much more elaborate ‘Conversion of St. Paul’ by Hans Speckaer which would be a much more ambitious one.  It all depends on your particular interpretation of the relevant Bible passage. Cologne Cathedral has a very good set of windows dedicated to St. Paul with the central theme of the Conversion, and other scenes from the life of St. Paul.  They also have a Nativity scene  amongst some forty major windows.  I think they have more money than us!
